Notes from the Volleyball Coaches
BDS
The BDS Lady Eagles are currently 4-2. I believe that we belong in the middle of Division A. We return a vast majority of our girls from last year who ended the season at State in Lincoln.
Diller-Odell
Our team is 3-2 on the season, our three wins are against Sterling twice and Southern. Our 2 losses were against C-2 Freeman 25-21 and 25-11 and C-2 Elmwood Murdock 25-21 and 25-19 both we competed with. This year we are fairly young and don’t have a lot of varsity experience, those players who have played varsity are our backnrow Mallory Schwab and Sidney Engelman as well Sophomore Brooklyn Barr. We did have a senior outside transfer-in which has been a great help, as well as an experienced freshman. I believe we belong in the bottom of A or the very top of B.
EMF
This year we are returning 7 players who lettered on varsity last year - Reese Tuttle (setter), Miley Ricenbaw (OH), Brynnlye Johnson (was a RS last year and now OH), Aniston Meints (MH), Kendal Filipi (DS last year), and Sophie Weber and Avery Tuttle who both went in defensively / serving specialist. We have started the season with sweeps against Deshler and Aquinas. Both of these teams are solid and should find success this year. We had a battle with Centennial on Thursday and was able to come away with the win 3-1. We have been able to find ways to be more balanced and all of our attackers/defenders have improved greatly from last season. Although we lost a lot of our offense last year, we still return a lot of players who are really talented and are going to be able to help us be successful this year. Since we have a lot of experience returning from our 3rd place state team last year and watching the games we have played so far, I believe we are a team that should be one of the top seeds in the A bracket.
FCSH
We are currently 4-4 coming off some tough losses to Auburn who beat Fairbury in five. A C2 state contender Bishop Leblond from Missouri. A state contender Rockport From Missouri and a 7-1 Fort Calhoun.
We beat DO last night and see a tough Sidney team on Thursday before heading into the Humboldt tournament.
While I would love to see us competing in the bottom of A and I really think we have the athleticism to and all the tools to be there, we are fighting the mental battle right now. And our record does not show our athleticism. I could see us bottom of A or top of B .
Freeman
When you look at our 3-3 record on paper, it doesn't reflect the caliber of team we are bringing to the court. All three of our losses came against top-tier programs, including last year’s Class C1 State Champions. Our early season schedule has heavy competition early. We have been battle-tested rather than comfortable. We are growing every single day, playing high-tempo, competitive ball, and proving we can stand toe-to-toe with elite teams. Based on our strength of schedule and overall trajectory, we belong at the top of Division A.
HTRS
We lost four starters from last year and have been really up and down. On Saturday we lost in three sets to Lourdes, Auburn, and Southern without one of our middle hitters (injured @ JCC). She will be back for MUDECAS.
We beat Lewiston in 3 and Harvard in 4, and lost to good Falls City and JCC teams. Probably belong in the top half of B division.
Johnson-Brock
Johnson-Brock is currently 5-2 on the season. We return four starters from last year’s team, including our setter, libero, and two primary outside hitters. We have already earned key wins over Elmwood-Murdock and Sidney, Iowa. Our two losses were both highly competitive matches that simply did not fall in our favor.
I believe this year’s team is stronger and more competitive than last year’s group. While we do have some new players stepping into significant roles, they have risen to the challenge and are making an immediate impact on the court. Based on our returning experience, early-season success, and overall level of play, I believe Johnson-Brock has earned consideration for a top-four placement in the A Division.

JCC
JCC volleyball has started out the season with a 5-0 record with wins over Arlington, Mead, Falls City, Nebraska City, and HTRS (FC has a win over JB. Arlington has a win over Palmyra.). We are young and inconsistent, but when we play well, we are tough. I would put us in the top half of A. We will play Freeman on Tuesday.
Lewiston
Our season has been challenging so far. In match play we sit at 0-5. Despite our early season match record, we have a competitive spirit, determination, and grit. This team fights hard through the challenges to continue building and growing. Our early record reflects a new roster and young team learning to play together. They are tough and have steadily improved their team chemistry and skills. Day by day, we are building a stronger team, players, and program.
Meridian
We are currently 4-1 on the season. We are still a relatively young team in terms of academic experience, as we do not have any seniors. We have four juniors, all of whom received significant playing time last year and are returning this season. We also have some incoming freshmen who have been very helpful and a few sophomores who had limited varsity court experience last year.
Overall, I would place us toward the top of Class B. We have a good mix of returning experience and young talent, and I think we have the potential to continue improving throughout the season.
Palmyra
We are currently at 3-3, and are a very young and developing team this season. We currently start three freshmen and two sophomores, with many of our most impactful players being some of our youngest athletes.
I do believe we are a better team than we were last season, and this group has a lot of potential. At the same time, we are definitely not yet where our program has been in recent years when we were consistently able to compete at the A Division level.
This group continues to show flashes of what they can become, but right now we are still working through the growing pains that come with such a young lineup. We are competitive in stretches and have the ability to play well against good teams, but we are not yet consistently performing at that level from start to finish. We believe this group will continue to improve as the season goes on, but right now we are still very much learning how to win together.
Parkview
Parkview is 1-3. These girls will work hard and won't give up. Our volleyball knowledge is growing and so is their confidence.
Pawnee City
Would most likely do best in upper part of B division. Have 8 seniors but limited subs
Southern
Our record is currently 3-6. We lost three games this past Saturday in a tournament in which we were missing one of our starters. We did win our last game against HTRS. This season we have lost 4 seniors but our girls do have varsity experience. When we play together as a team we are competitive, I think we should be in the B bracket.
Sterling
Currently, we are 0-5. While we’re not all young age-wise, skill-wise we are learning a lot and are raw. We have potential, but I see us middle to bottom of the B division.
Tri County
Comments for Tri County: we believe that Tri county should be put in the A division this year we are 2-1 so far. We are a young but competitive team with a ton of talent. We are more than capable of taking on some higher teams. Last year we placed 4th in the A division and we believe we could be higher this year!
